COBA today supported National Scams Awareness Week, which has the theme “Ask Yourself Is this for Real”.

Threat-based impersonation scams are common and can be traumatic for the victim.

In these scams, scammers pretend to be from a government agency or well-known company who threaten you into handing over your money or personal information.

“COBA is a proud supporter of initiatives that help Australians stay smart online and protect themselves,” COBA CEO Michael Lawrence said.

“We encourage consumers to take a small amount of time this week to make sure they are aware of the simply steps to take to avoid scams.”

National Scams Awareness Week has some simple tips to avoid being a victim to scammers including:

  • Treat threatening phone calls demanding money as suspicious
  • Check if the call is genuine, including through online phone directories and searches
  • Never send money or give your bank account details, credit card details or other personal information to anyone you don’t know or trust
  • A government agency or trusted business will never ask you to pay by unusual methods such as gift cards, iTunes cards, wire transfers or bitcoin
  • Don’t open suspicious texts, pop-ups, emails, links or attachments, delete them
  • Never give anyone remote access to your computer
