Australia's customer owned banking sector has begun 2013 with the most satisfied customers in Australia after the release of the latest Roy Morgan Research figures.

The independent research confirms the number one ranking of credit unions, building societies and mutual banks yet again, compared to the four major banks.

Roy Morgan Research's survey found that for Main Financial Institution, the Mutual Sector (92.5%), and Mutual Banks (93.1%), outperform the Major Four Banks (80.7%).

"We have a genuine partnership with our customers which is reflected in these market leading figures," Abacus CEO Louise Petschler said.

"Consumers want convenience, product choice and great value for money, a combination offered across our diverse industry representing more than 100 institutions."

Credit unions, building societies and mutual banks are committed again to delivering for customers in 2013.

The Roy Morgan figures reflect the better value and service offered to more than 4.5 million customers across the country, which represents one in five Australians.

"There's a really strong message for Australian consumers looking for a better relationship with their bank and more value to stretch their household budget further," Ms Petschler said.

"There's a better deal and customer experience at a local credit union, building society or mutual bank waiting for you."
