Regional communities across Australia will have a vehicle to take on the big banks and send a message to Canberra with the announcement today of a Balance Banking Campaign Bus Tour, starting in Newcastle and Cessnock this week.

Abacus today unveiled the details of the bus timetable, which will feature community BBQ events that offer local people a voice and further information about the benefits of more competition and an independent inquiry into the banking system.

The Balance Banking Bus road trip begins on Thursday in Newcastle (April 18), followed by Cessnock on Friday (April 19th), with further visits to Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Lismore, Armidale, Dubbo and Orange.

Balance Banking Campaign Spokesperson Mark Degotardi said the tour offers local communities the chance to tell politicians and bureaucrats that banking competition matters to regional Australia.

"We're excited about going to places that we consider home for customer owned banking, where we have a proud history of supporting local communities to grow," Mr Degotardi said.

"We encourage people to come and join us, grab some free lunch on us and help us take up the fight for a better banking system in local towns and communities across Australia.

"Regional Australian shouldn't feel threatened or silenced by the big end of town and we hope this tour will encourage people to speak up and have their say."

The bus journey follows the official launch of Balance Banking nationally in February, which was underpinned by research showing most Australians support a banking system inquiry and want more banking competition.

When the bus arrives at each venue a community event featuring a free sausage sizzle, showbags and entertainment will be held, along with more information to help people achieve better balance in banking.

Locals will have the opportunity to sign petitions supporting an inquiry into banking, press a bus "button" to support a better banking deal and talk to Abacus and local credit union, building society and mutual bank staff to learn more about the campaign.
