*** Campaign Bus heads to Canberra, Albury, Shepparton, Bendigo, Ballarat, and Melbourne

A national campaign pushing for more banking competition through an independent inquiry will visit communities in Canberra, regional Victoria and Melbourne starting this Thursday (June 6).

The Balance Banking campaign bus hits the road in Canberra on Thursday, followed by visits to Albury-Wodonga, Shepparton, Bendigo, Ballarat and Melbourne.

The customer owned banking sector is taking on the big banks and encouraging voters to send a message to Federal politicians in an election year about the need for a better banking deal.

The Canberra and Victoria tour follows a successful campaign in regional NSW in April, which saw almost 1000 people sign a petition supporting a banking system inquiry.

Balance Banking Campaign Spokesman Mark Degotardi said feedback from the first campaign bus tour showed Australians have welcomed the chance to send a message to politicians and bureaucrats about the need for more competition.

"We knew banking competition was an important issue, particularly in regional Australia," Mr Degotardi said.

"What we saw in regional NSW were locals eager to take up this fight for a better deal for their community.

"We're confident Victorians and locals in Canberra will be just as keen to support us at our free community BBQs, sign a petition, and learn more about customer owned banking."

Polling of 1000 Australians released in February to launch Balance Banking showed 2 out of 3 people surveyed support an independent financial system inquiry, something which hasn't been held since 1997.

When the bus arrives a community event will be held including a free sausage sizzle* and showbags, along with more information to help people lobby for better balance in banking.

Locals can also talk to Abacus and local credit union, building society and mutual bank staff to learn more about the campaign.
