Australia’s industry body for customer owned banking today urged the 4.5 million customers it represents to protect themselves against online scams by learning about the top 5 tips as part of National Consumer Fraud Week.

National Consumer Fraud Week (June 17-23) has the aim of outsmarting scammers online by education Australians about safe online transactions.

Abacus CEO Louise Petschler said it's a timely reminder for Australians to stay ahead of the game and defy the scammers.

"No one likes feeling duped and scammers are becoming more cunning in the ways they target hard working Australians buying and selling goods online," Ms Petschler said.

"The convenience of online shopping is self-evident, but people do need to exercise caution and protect themselves when online."

National Consumer Fraud Week is an initiative of the Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce, which Abacus is a proud partner of.

The top five tips are:

  • Think twice – if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Find out what other shoppers say – make sure the person that you are dealing with, and their offer, is the real deal.
  • Protect your identity – your personal details are private and invaluable; keep them that way and away from scammers.
  • Keep your computer secure – Install software that protects your computer from viruses and unwanted programs and make sure it is kept up-to-date.
  • Only pay via secure payment methods – look for a web address starting with 'https' and a closed padlock symbol. Never use a wire transfer service to send money to anyone you do not know and trust, and do not share your financial details with anyone.
