*** Campaign to tour Cairns, Townsville, Toowoomba and Brisbane

The Customer Owned Banking Association will mount a pre-election push for a an independent banking inquiry, by visiting Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's home state of Queensland starting next week.

The Balance Banking campaign bus will be on location in the major Queensland centres of Cairns, Townsville, Toowoomba and Brisbane.

The campaign is calling for politicians to support an independent inquiry into the banking system, to deliver more banking competition and choice for Australian consumers.

"Voters are quite rightly concerned about banking competition and are very supportive of our campaign," Balance Banking spokesman Mark Degotardi said.

"Polling shows 2 out of 3 Australians want an inquiry, something desperately needed after the GFC cemented the market power and dominance of the major banks."

"Our message to Queenslanders is it's an issue worth fighting for and we look forward to seeing them at our free community lunch and breakfast events."

Venues and dates for the Balance Banking Queensland tour are:

  • Thursday 18th July – Cairns, The Esplanade, West Lagoon – "Lorikeet", 11:30am to 2pm.
  • Friday 19th July – Townsville, The Strand Park, The Strand Precinct, 11am to 1pm.
  • Thursday 25th July – Toowoomba, Alford Place, corner of Margaret & Victoria St, 11:30am to 2pm.
  • Friday 26th July – Brisbane, King George Square, 7am to 11am.*
