The Customer Owned Banking Association today said the latest consumer research shows the customer owned model is the clear leader in banking customer satisfaction.

Latest Roy Morgan Research data for the six months to July 2013 reveals customer owned banking institutions continue their dominance over the major banks.

The Roy Morgan analysis found that for Main Financial Institution, the 'Mutual Sector' (91.4%), outperforms the 'Major Four Banks' (81.9%).

COBA Chief Executive Louise Petschler said the result remains strong and demonstrates the value of customer service.

"We are working hard to encourage more Australians to do their banking with us and take up more of our innovative products backed by outstanding service," Ms Petschler said.

"Our long time record as the leader in customer satisfaction speaks for itself.

"But we want to attract new customers to build on our strong presence across Australia."

COBA represents credit unions, building societies and mutual banks who together have 4.5 million customers.
