HomeView 2013 Media ReleasesAvoid an online shopping hangover this Christmas

Consumers are being urged to take simple steps online and on mobile phones when buying presents this Christmas.

The Customer Owned Banking Association says shoppers should use Stay Smart Online to ensure any purchase they make is safe and secure.

COBA is a partner of Stay Smart Online, which is particularly important at this time of year when online shopping is high.

“Convenience and choice is driving the popularity of online shopping, but consumers need to be careful to avoid nasty surprises, “COBA Manager of Fraud and Financial Crime Leanne Vale said.

“The popularity of mobile phone and internet shopping does come with some increased risk.

“But by sticking to some easy to follow rules, the risk of fraud and scams can be avoided.”

COBA today said consumers should read the Stay Smart tips for safe online shopping, in order to avoid scams that try to lure unsuspecting consumers.

The tips include:

  • If the website looks suspicious or unprofessional or makes unrealistic promises, it probably is.
  • Know what you are buying.
  • Read all the fine print, including currency, postage and other charges. Use a secure payment method such as PayPal, BPay, or your credit card.
  • Always print and keep a copy of the transaction.
  • Always conduct transactions within the auction website.

“There’s no doubting the fun of shopping for Christmas online and by taking care you can avoid being a victim of scammers who are very active at this time of year,” Ms Vale added.

Stay Smart Online is a Federal Government initiative providing Australian internet users with the simple steps they can take to protect their personal and financial information online.
