HomeView 2014 Media ReleasesDay to celebrate value of customer owned banking

The Customer Owned Banking Association today celebrated International Credit Union Day and the community contribution made by credit unions and other customer owned banking institutions around Australia.

The worldwide theme "Local Service, Global Good” underlines the focus that credit unions have in their local area and on playing a role in developing communities, both in Australia and internationally.

Acting COBA CEO Mark Degotardi said the long term presence of these institutions supports stability, competition and choice in Australia’s financial system.

“The customer owned banking sector including credit unions help Australians to achieve their financial goals, grow and thrive,” Mr Degotardi said.

“They play a critical role, particularly in regional Australia as major employers and supporters of local businesses, community and charity groups.”

Globally, credit unions and customer owned financial institutions represent 208 million customers, through more than 57,000 organisations in 103 countries.

Customer owned banking organisations across Australia are hosting events today to celebrate International Credit Union Day and the contribution of our sector to the community.

Local credit unions and other customer owned banking organisations will also host events to raise money and awareness of CUFA’s Village Entrepreneur program as well as CUFA International Projects. This program helps Village Entrepreneurs in Cambodia and Timor-Leste to change their lives and step out of poverty by starting up a business.

Credit unions along with mutual banks and building societies support people in the communities they operate in by offering responsible, ethical, competitive and sustainable banking products.
