The Customer Owned Banking Association (COBA) today announced the appointment of Wendy Machin as the independent Chair of the COBA Board.

Ms Machin comes to the role after chairing one of the country’s largest customer owned organisations, the NRMA, for 6 years.  She brings 30 years of government, business and corporate experience to this new role.

Ms Machin served in the NSW Legislative Assembly for 11 years holding the Consumer Affairs portfolio in Government at the time of the introduction of uniform consumer credit laws. On leaving politics she has enjoyed a successful career in business. A past President of the NRMA, she remains a Director and Deputy President of that organisation as well as serving as a Director of the Australian Automobile Association representing 7 million members, of Destination NSW and other government and corporate bodies.

Announcing the appointment COBA CEO Mark Degotardi said:

“On behalf of the customer owned banking sector, I warmly welcome Wendy into this new role. Her engagement with our member institutions will help the industry collaborate, innovate and grow.

“The landmark Murray Report has shown the need and appetite for consumer focused financial services, where decisions are made with the customer and community firmly in mind. Wendy brings obvious skills, deep insights and experience, particularly through her work in co-operative, customer focused business environments. I look forward to working with her on the positive challenges ahead and am sure Wendy will feel right at home in a sector that values diversity, trust and ethical banking services.

Commenting on her appointment Wendy Machin said:

“I am delighted to be appointed the independent Chair of COBA and have the opportunity to work with customer owned banks, credit unions and building societies around Australia. I can see a bright future ahead and I will be supporting these institutions and their customers to achieve their collective ambitions.

“The customer-owned banking model is important to individuals and to the broader community.  We put people first, and we play an important part in the social and economic fabric of communities across Australia.  It is a great privilege to be leading an organisation whose focus is on bringing the benefit of competition and choice in banking to more and more Australians.

Outgoing Chair Julianne Plath served in the role on an interim basis while an independent Chair was recruited and remains on the COBA Board as a Director.
