ICU Day 2015The Customer Owned Banking Association today celebrates International Credit Union Day and the continued global success of a people-first approach to banking.

“The global theme, ‘People Helping People’ captures the focus of the customer owned model in Australia,” COBA CEO Mark Degotardi said.

“More than ever, there is a consumer appetite for trusted banking services that focus on customers and the communities.

“The customer owned banking model is meeting this need.”

International Credit Union Day raises awareness about the co-operative approach to banking around the world and the positive difference the sector continues to make in developed and emerging nations.

Globally, credit unions and customer owned financial institutions serve 217 million customers, through more than 57,000 organisations in 105 countries.

“In Australia customer owned banking has a proud history of providing consumers with genuine choice, competitive pricing and market leading customer service,” Mr. Degotardi said.

“Of Australia’s 92 customer-owned banking institutions, there are 73 credit unions serving different communities right across the country.

“Our model continues to be highly relevant today. We bring a fundamentally different model to the market which is good for competition and adds to the stability of our financial system."

Credit unions locally and across the globe will celebrate ICU Day with community activities.

Australia’s largest credit union CUA celebrated the importance of ICU Day with two school events dedicated to 'People helping People'.

CUA this week presented $5,000 grants to two schools in Victoria - Stella Maris Primary School and Diamond Valley Special School - for an environmental initiative and an independent living centre.
