150+ years of ingenuity

Through the COVID-19 health crisis and onset of recession, it became clear that community morale would play a key role in the days ahead.

With this in mind, COBA launched a public campaign in June to celebrate the long-standing relationship between Australians and customer owned banking.

The month-long campaign celebrated the customer owned banking sector’s spirit of ingenuity and heritage of supporting customers through tough times.

“Australia’s credit unions, mutual banks and building societies have over 150 years of putting people first,” said Michael Lawrence, CEO of COBA.

“This ‘can do’ attitude and ingenuity are qualities to celebrate as we move forward as a nation. Today, customer owned banking supports over four-and-a-half million Australians.”

COBA’s 64 members embraced the campaign through social media, connecting with their communities and telling stories about their origins and how they are supporting people today.

“We have enjoyed the creative ways in which members have shared the campaign with their customers, including one member sharing the content via their customer app.

“It is great to see them proudly sharing their history with their communities around the country.”
