Teachers Mutual Bank: Marking 60 years of banking for good

The history of customer-owned banking is a story of communities taking matters into their own hands, achieving more when they work together. As Teachers Mutual Bank Limited marks its 60th anniversary in 2026, its story serves as a powerful example of how customer-owned banks can grow and evolve while staying focused on the people they were created to serve.

Ahead of Teacher’s Day here in Australia, Teachers Mutual Bank Limited’s CEO Anthony Hughes reflects on the organisation’s six-decade journey, and how the organisation continues to be defined by a commitment to members, community impact, and purpose.

The institution’s story began in 1966, when a group of teachers came together to form Hornsby Teachers Association Credit Union in NSW. It was built on the values of mutual support and fair, affordable banking that understood their needs. Teachers volunteered their time to help other teachers achieve greater financial security and access to credit.

The following year, after securing approval for payroll deductions through the NSW Department of Education, the local credit union expanded into a statewide-member institution, and membership was opened to all teachers across the state.

Today, Teachers Mutual Bank Limited operates five retail brands – Teachers Mutual Bank, Australian Mutual Bank, UniBank, Firefighters Mutual Bank and Health Professionals Bank – to serve more than 280,000 members across education, healthcare, emergency services, transport and government.

The customer-owned bank has grown significantly since 1966, but as it marks its diamond anniversary, the founding purpose remains unchanged: helping members achieve their financial goals through the power of mutual ownership.

“Sixty years is a remarkable achievement because it demonstrates how much our foundations still matter. Teachers came together to build a bank that worked for them, and generations of members and employees have carried that forward. For me, this milestone anniversary is a moment to celebrate that trust and to recognise the responsibility we have to keep earning it,” said CEO Anthony Hughes.

As a customer-owned bank, the focus is on delivering value for members, not returns for external shareholders. Products, policies and support are designed around the needs of the members’ professions. For teachers this means making home loans more accessible for casual and relief teachers, offering everyday and savings accounts with $0 monthly fees, providing mobile bankers who can meet members at school, at home or over the phone, and an Australian-based call centre to support members.

This personalised approach recently helped 27-year-old educator Sophie achieve her property dream, supporting her to buy a three-bedroom home in the Lake Illawarra area of NSW. You can learn more about Sophie’s story here.

Moreover, Teachers Mutual Bank Limited’s profits are reinvested into better products, improved services, secure digital banking and stronger support for the communities it serves.

“What excites me is the combination of purpose and momentum. We have a proud history, a much broader community of members and more capability to invest in the things that matter to them. There is real energy across the bank. We know what we stand for, and we have the ambition to make the member experience simpler and more personal.”

This people-first approach has driven numerous significant milestones for the organisation – expanding from 29 members and $644 in assets in 1967 to become Australia’s largest credit union by 1991, with over 60 recognitions for sustainability and ESG performance since 2014 and receiving its first B-Corp certification in 2022.

“I am most proud of the way our people turn our purpose into something real. You see it in the care we show members, the impact we make in our communities and the way our teams have handled significant change. Banking for Good actively shows up in our decisions and behaviour – I see that across the bank every day,” he added.

Recent celebrations marking Teachers Mutual Bank’s 60th anniversary

On 1 May 2026, Australian Mutual Bank Ltd merged with Teachers Mutual Bank Limited, bringing together two values-aligned mutual banks to create a stronger and more resilient organisation that remains 100% member-owned.

Members have already benefited from a range of enhancements, Hughes noted, including the reduction or removal of more than 30 fees and charges, access to an expanded branch network, extended contact centre hours and self-service international payments through digital banking.

“The biggest opportunity we have now is to combine our enhanced scale with the closeness of a mutual. We can invest more in digital capability, understand members better and reach more people in the professions and communities we serve. If we do that well, growth gives us even greater capacity to create value for members and deliver positive impact beyond the bank,” he said.

At Teachers Mutual Bank Limited, member ownership shapes every decision, enabling the organisation to focus on member value, community impact and sustainable growth rather than shareholder returns.

Reflecting on what the next six decades may look like, Hughes believes customer-owned banks will play an increasingly important role in providing a genuine alternative to the major banks.

“The bank will keep evolving because members’ lives and expectations keep changing. We need to make everyday banking effortless, use technology well and be there with personal support when it really matters. The way people bank will continue to change. Our job is to move with that change while holding on to the trust, care and long-term perspective that come from being a mutual. At the same time, it’s my hope that the TMBL of 2086 looks very different in how it delivers banking, because it will need to. But I hope it feels unmistakably the same in what it stands for: owned by members, guided by purpose and trusted to act in their interests,” he said.
